ILearnRW: Integrated Intelligent Learning Environment for Reading and Writing

I am a co-investigator of the EU FP7-funded project ILearnRW, which is being undertaken by an interdisciplinary consortium made up of academic partners (the University of Malta, the National Technical University of Athens, the University of Birmingham, the Technological Institution of Epirus, Lucian Blaga University of Sibiu), along with Dolphin Computer Access and the UK-based Dyslexia Institute.

The core objective of the ILearnRW project is to develop an assistive tool for dyslexic learners between the ages of 9 - 11 that comprises a reading app as well as an adaptive learning game. Adaptation will take place according to a learner profile, so that the game will present challenges requiring e.g. practice of skills for which specific learners have yet to demonstrate mastery. My role in the project is as lead game designer. My interests in this project span how to work dyslexia learning activities into a cohesive game experience, how to design success, failure, and learning experiences for players with self-esteem concerns, and how to design adaptive learning games.
