Games, gamification, and culture

Culture is a critical component of our interpretation of the world. I am interested in understanding how it affects the ways in which we design, play, and interpret games. My initial interest in culture came through my work on the connections between cross-cultural psychology and attitude and behaviour change via persuasive games. Since then, however, I have also begun to examine how culture and games relate to one another more broadly. Perspectives include the influence of player and designer cultures on play and design, as well as positioning games themselves as cultures. I have also been looking at the interface (or lack thereof) between gamification and culture. My point of focus is on how gamification can be adapted for different cultural contexts.
